A losing hand
It's not official, but there are reports surfacing that Johan Santana has been traded to the Mets for OF Carlos Gomez and pitchers Deolis Guerra, Phil Humber and Kevin Mulvey. Fernando Martinez is apparently not part of the deal. Santana will of course have to work out a contract with the Mets for the deal to go through.
Phil Hughes and Melky Cabrera, or Jon Lester, Coco Crisp and Jed Lowrie both seem like much, much better deals to me. If this is true, the Twins overplayed their hand and paid dearly for it.
Of course, if even two of those four prospects turn into quality players, we'll look back at this and laugh.
Here's hoping it happens.

The good thing is, this is the last major Terry Ryan fuck-up Bill Smith has to deal with.
Juan Rincon to Boston for Coco Crisp. Then I wouldn't feel so bad.
The last of Terry Ryan eh? He's still an advisor for the organization so I'd guess he's still playing a part in the decision making. THe issue of not being able to resign Santana has more to do with the Pohlads sitting on their money than Ryan's decision making. I'm just happy they were gracious enough to let us keep Morneau for another 6 years.
I'd take Rincon and Gomez over Crisp any day of the week.
Leafin' through the rule book last night an' saw this about the dress code for girl refs:
Rule 34A1: The temptation after a tough night of getting yelled at is to unwind at a bar or club in the area in your civilian clothing. Don't give-in to this. If you're a ref in the gym, you're a ref in the bar. Once you ref a game, wear those ref clothes for the rest of the day or night. No. 1, it shows you are committed to your responsibilites as a girl ref. No. 2, it encourages you to purchase slacks of the proper size. It's no secret that a lot of girl refs tend to "put on a few" during the season, this being the result of trying to "eat away" the unpleasant feelings associated with getting yelled at all the time.
If you do some reading, you'll discover, it wasn't so much Pohlad refusing to pay players. It was Terry Ryan thinking he could get better value from younger players.
Yes, Terry Ryan is still involved. However, he's not calling the shots.
Also, forget Gomez. Would you take Rincon over Crisp? If so, you're a jackass.
Its a known fact that Pohlad rarely spends the big bucks and the Twins are known for bringing up players through their minor league program, but I believe that Ryan would have liked to keep many players in the organization but Pohlad wouldn't pay up.
Crisps is no longer the player he was in Cleveland. Rincon is still a talented reliever and they got Gomez so they need to use him
"I believe that Ryan would have liked to keep many players in the organization but Pohlad wouldn't pay up."
You believe. Too bad you're fucking wrong. Do a little research.
