Just sort of killin' a little time perusing the trusty ol' rulebook this morning. Thought ah saw somthin' ya might be interested in:
Rule 3DA78: There is a school of thought among girl refs, and those who wish they were, to get stylish with the hairdo these days. You have your Bufonts, shag cuts, mullets, buns, farm-style -- it's all out there with the girl refs these days and their haircuts. Anything seemingly goes. The theory is that when a coach sees a person who obviously spent a lot of time on her appearance, they'll be less inclined to yell at the girl refs. With the exception of the farm-style cut, this actually could not be further from the truth. Coaches tend to disrespect girl refs with fancy haircuts. A thing to be aware of is how your particular hairdo adapts itself to your shape. As you well know, this is traditionally a "weight-gain" time for girl refs because they start getting medieval at the dinner table. This is an attempt to internalize stress of course, and while it may work for a short time, you will pay a price in re-adapting your ref uniform to your new frame. Like a barge run adrift on Lake Oahe, sometimes it goes beyond merely buying new ref clothes. Sometimes you just get too fat to ref anymore and have to quit or just be the stats girl or something.
Either way, you make the call. If it's anything like the other calls you make during the week, you'll probably screw it up. Yes, those coaches yell at everyone, but not like they yell at you. They yell at you because you're a girl ref, yes, but mostly they yell at you because you're a shitty ref.
